Ghel Practice - Fees

Our fees are shown together with the relevant Medicare item numbers and estimated Medicare rebates to help you understand your expected out-of-pocket costs.

In general, our services fall into two categories:

Ongoing Care
These appointments are intended for patients who require ongoing psychiatric treatment, medication management, specialist reviews, or follow-up care.

One-Off Assessments
These appointments are intended for patients seeking a comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnostic clarification, and treatment recommendations that are then provided to their GP and other treating healthcare professionals.

Please note that all fees are payable in advance and must be received at least 24–48 hours prior to your appointment or before any requested service can be provided.

This review is available to you if you are:

  • A new patient to our practice, or
  • A returning patient who previously attended with a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan (MBS Item 291), or
  • A returning patient of Dr Caroline whose 296 referral (MBS Item 296) to our practice has expired.

To be eligible, you will need either a referral for Item 293 from your GP, or an Item 296 referral. Please speak to your GP before your appointment to ensure the correct referral is in place.

Medicare rebate notes

With a 296 referral is titration and up to 9 follow-ups included.

A normal 291 referral is a one-off referral and does not include follow-ups/titration.

However a 291 referral with the text “Item 291 for assessment and management , and ongoing management/titration if required.” extends the 291 referral to include follow-ups/titration if needed.

If you have seen a psychiatrist within the past 12 months, you will not be eligible for a Medicare rebate for an initial consultation / Mental Health / ADHD Assessment under MBS item 296/92437.

Additionally, if you have received a consultation under MBS item 291 or 92435 within the past 12 months, you will also not be eligible for a rebate for an initial consultation / Mental Health / ADHD Assessment under MBS item 291/92435.

If you had an assessment with another clinic or with a 291 referral and you’re looking for follow-ups, please ask your GP for a 296 referral.

Administrative Fees

Since 1 June 2026, certain administrative services attract separate fees.

Please note that administrative fees do not apply to services that are directly connected to a scheduled appointment.

For example, the consultation fee already includes:

  • Your assessment report and treatment recommendations provided to your GP following a first / comprehensive or ADHD assessment.
  • Prescriptions issued as part of a scheduled assessment or follow-up appointment.
  • Routine clinical correspondence directly arising from your consultation.

Administrative fees generally apply only to additional requests outside of scheduled appointments, such as repeat prescription requests, medical letters, hand-over letters, forms, certificates, and other non-consultation services.

These fees are not listed on this page but are outlined in our Patient Guide. Please contact us if you would like a copy.

How do I start

Everything you need to know.

About booking, assessment, and the follow-up process.

1. Ask your GP for a referral

The referral letter should include your personal details, relevant mental health history, and any previous investigations or treatments.

A new referral can be addressed to Ghel Practice for Psychiatry.

However, if you already have a referral addressed to another psychiatrist, you can still use that.
