FAQ on Depression and Anxiety
What's the difference between seeing a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and offer treatment planning. At Ghel Practice, Dr Caroline provides both diagnosis and management for a wide range of mental health conditions — including medication review when needed. Many patients also see a psychologist alongside psychiatric care for psychotherapy.
Can I see a psychiatrist online for depression or anxiety?
Yes. At Ghel Practice, all appointments are via secure telehealth. You don’t need to leave home or travel to a clinic. Many people find telehealth more flexible and less stressful, especially when already feeling overwhelmed.
What kinds of problems can you help with?
We support adults (aged 18–65) with a range of mental health concerns, including:
Depression (including postpartum depression)
Generalised anxiety
Panic attacks
Social anxiety
Health anxiety
Work-related stress and burnout
Adjustment difficulties (e.g. after grief, separation, or change)
Difficulty coping or functioning day-to-day
Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist at Ghel Practice?
Yes. To access Medicare rebates, you’ll need a referral from your GP. Together, you and your GP can decide whether a Referral 291 (comprehensive assessment and report) or Referral 296 (ongoing psychiatric care) is more appropriate.
Your GP can upload the referral securely via www.ghel.com.au — and the process is also outlined under the “Bookings” section of our website. If your GP has any questions, our friendly admin team is happy to help.
How soon can I get an appointment?
Actually there’s no waitlist. We usually offer appointments within 7 days of receiving the referral.
What happens before the psychiatric assessment?
Before your appointment, you’ll receive a set of online questionnaires to complete. These help Dr Caroline understand your symptoms, background, and overall wellbeing. They’re an important part of the process and allow her to prepare thoroughly before you even meet.
Does Dr Caroline read all of that before the appointment?
Yes — Dr Caroline personally reviews your referral, questionnaire results, and relevant background in detail before the session. This takes time but allows the assessment to be focused and tailored to your specific situation from the very beginning.
What happens during the appointment?
The assessment is done via secure video call and usually takes around 45–60 minutes. Dr Caroline will talk with you about what you’re experiencing, your mental health history, physical health, and any other important factors. She’ll ask questions, listen carefully, and make sure you feel heard and supported throughout.
Why do I only need one session?
At Ghel Practice, we’re able to complete your psychiatric assessment in one longer session because Dr Caroline prepares so thoroughly in advance. She reads through your referral and questionnaires before you meet, so the appointment can be focused and efficient — without feeling rushed. This saves you time, money, and the stress of coming back for multiple appointments.
What happens after the assessment?
After your session, Dr Caroline takes time to carefully reflect on everything you’ve shared. She then writes a detailed, personalised report for your GP. This isn’t a quick summary — it includes:
A clear explanation of what’s going on
Diagnosis, if one is made
A tailored treatment and management plan
Medication options (if appropriate)
Practical recommendations your GP can follow
Does writing the report take time?
Yes — a lot of care goes into it. While the session itself might be under an hour, the full process includes:
Time spent preparing before your session
A structured, in-depth assessment during the appointment
Writing a comprehensive report afterward
This behind-the-scenes work often takes several hours, and it’s all part of what you’re receiving in the consultation. It ensures you, your GP, and any other providers have a clear roadmap for moving forward.
Do you offer treatment or just the diagnosis?
If you’re referred under Item 291, you’ll receive a detailed report and treatment recommendations your GP can follow. If you’re referred for ongoing care, Dr Caroline can continue to support you directly — including medication management and regular follow-up.
Can you help if I’ve already tried other treatments and nothing’s worked?
Yes. Many people come to us after trying other treatments or feeling stuck. Dr Caroline offers a thoughtful, structured review of what’s been tried and can explore new approaches — whether that’s medication, lifestyle changes, referrals, or coordination with your GP or psychologist.
Can I get help even if I’m not sure what I’m feeling is ‘bad enough’?
Absolutely. You don’t have to be in crisis to reach out. If something feels off, or your mental health has been affecting your daily life, relationships, or work — we’re here to help.
Do you offer support for trauma, grief, or major life changes?
Yes. Ghel Practice provides support for people going through difficult transitions, losses, or life stressors. Sometimes these experiences lead to anxiety or low mood; other times they just feel overwhelming or confusing. You don’t have to go through it alone.
