Consultant psychiatrist Dr Caroline Viebke

I offer thoughtful, evidence-based psychiatric care to adults across Western Australia through telehealth. My approach combines clinical expertise with genuine human connection—because good psychiatry isn’t just about diagnosis or medication. It’s about understanding people in the context of their lives, their environments, and their hopes for change.

With 20 years of clinical experience in both public and private mental health, I provide comprehensive psychiatric assessments, medication management, and psychotherapy—either directly or in close collaboration with psychologists and GPs. I believe in working collaboratively with other professionals to ensure continuity and depth of care.

A Broad and Deep Foundation

I completed my specialist training in Switzerland, working in leading hospitals and community mental health services across the country. I hold Swiss specialist qualifications in both psychiatry and general medicine, and completed advanced psychotherapy training (360 hours) at the Klaus-Grawe-Institute in Zurich, with a focus on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and interpersonal approaches.

From 2013 to 2023, I ran two private practices in Zurich and Uster, where I treated a broad range of adult patients and supervised a team of psychologists. My work extended into the community, supporting individuals living with psychosocial disabilities, including those in residential care settings—always with a strong emphasis on integrated, multidisciplinary care.

Local Experience in Western Australia

Since moving to Perth, I have worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist at Royal Perth Hospital, leading a 20-bed voluntary adult inpatient ward. I’ve also worked in the Emergency Department at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, as well as its inpatient mental health unit.
In each setting, I’ve collaborated with multidisciplinary teams—nurses, psychologists, social workers, GPs, and trainees—to provide consistent, person-centred care. Teaching and mentoring the next generation of doctors remains an important part of my work.
In February 2025, I became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), after completing the Specialist Pathway for overseas-trained psychiatrists.

A Commitment to Thoughtful, Science-Based Care

I also hold a Doctor of Medicine (Dr. med.) from the University of Zurich/Switzerland, awarded for my research on emotional processing and risk perception in the human brain. While not equivalent to a PhD, the Swiss/German Dr. med. is a research degree completed over several years and reflects a strong academic foundation. My work has been published in journals such as Brain Research and Brain Imaging and Behavior.

This academic background supports my commitment to evidence-based practice, ongoing learning, and staying aligned with current advances in psychiatric care.
