Your Pathway to Care
Not sure which appointment is right for you? Start with the question that fits best.
Start here — your first decision
Choose the option that describes you best — it takes you straight to the matching section below.
I think I may have ADHD (not yet diagnosed)
New to Ghel Practice
See the comprehensive one-off assessment or the ongoing-care first appointment below — both can lead to an ADHD diagnosis.
Already seeing us for something else?
If you’re already under our care (e.g. for depression or anxiety) and are now wondering about ADHD, please email us first — we’ll discuss the best next step with you directly.
I already have an ADHD diagnosis
Transferring your care to Ghel Practice
Requires: your official diagnosis letter, submitted before your appointment is booked. If your stimulant medication has been stopped for around 2 years or longer without ongoing specialist care, a full new assessment is usually needed (learn more).
You have two options:
- A meet-and-greet appointment — shorter and more affordable, if you’d simply like to get started.
- If your review is due soon anyway, you can combine it with this first appointment instead — this costs a little more, but comes with a noticeably higher Medicare rebate. Your GP will need to word the referral accordingly.
Please mention in the notes field whether you’d like the meet-and-greet or the combined review appointment.
Please tick both boxes to continue – or, if they don't apply to you, start a new ADHD assessment instead.
Transitioning from a paediatrician
Requires: your original diagnosis documents from your paediatrician, submitted before your appointment is booked.
Documents available, and your medication is current or was stopped less than around 2 years ago? A review is usually enough — no full new assessment needed.
Documents no longer available, or medication stopped around 2 years ago or longer? A full new assessment is usually needed, the same as for a first-time diagnosis — without the original documents, or after such a long gap, the diagnosis can no longer be reliably confirmed without reassessing you (learn more).
Please mention in the notes field that you’re transitioning from paediatric care, and whether your medication is current or when it was stopped.
Please tick both boxes to continue – or, if they don't apply to you, start a new ADHD assessment instead.

The appointments themselves
Comprehensive one-off assessment
Requires: a GP referral. New patients only.
Covers ADHD or a general psychiatric assessment. You receive a thorough assessment and a written report for your GP. This is our most involved appointment, since it includes a full assessment and management plan — your GP takes over your ongoing care afterwards, unless you choose the ongoing-care option below instead. You can also move to ongoing care with us later — your GP just needs to issue a further referral.
Ongoing-care first appointment
Requires: a GP referral for ongoing care. New patients only.
A more affordable first appointment, intended from the outset for ongoing collaboration — including further appointments and, if needed, medication adjustments. It can also lead to an ADHD diagnosis, though the Medicare rebate is lower than for the one-off assessment.
Review
Requires: you’ve already had an assessment with us — either a one-off assessment or an ongoing-care first appointment. Existing patients only.
We require a review 12 months after your diagnosis — after that, the timing of further reviews is agreed with us.
Exception — ADHD medication in South Australia: SA’s own rules apply. If your treatment is stable, an updated specialist review is generally only needed if your treatment changes, if your last review was more than 5 years ago, or if SA Health requests one.
For the review itself, what matters is how long ago your last assessment was:
- Less than 12 months ago? Your GP issues a standard review referral — though the Medicare rebate is lower than for the option below. Only available after a one-off assessment; if you’re in ongoing care with us, your review takes place once 12 months have passed.
- 12 months or more ago? If clinically appropriate, it’s almost always worth waiting until this point: the fee stays exactly the same, but your Medicare rebate is significantly higher — nearly double. Your GP will need a fresh referral with different wording than a standard review referral.
Routine follow-up
Existing patients only — not a substitute for your review above.
A shorter or longer follow-up appointment, depending on how much needs discussing.
Need the longer appointment instead? Just mention it in the notes field.
Under MBS Explanatory Note AN.0.30, one or two consultations to monitor the titration of a Schedule 8 medication are also permitted under a standard assessment referral, before care transfers back to your GP.
Frequently asked questions
Which appointment should I book with a psychiatrist?
It depends on two things: whether you already have an ADHD diagnosis, and whether you’re new to Ghel Practice. Pick the matching question at the top of this page — it leads you straight to the right appointment, and the “Start now” button opens our upload form with the right details already filled in.
What's the difference between a one-off assessment and ongoing care?
A comprehensive one-off assessment gives you a thorough psychiatric assessment and a written report with a management plan for your GP, who then continues your care. With ongoing care, you keep seeing us after the first appointment — for follow-ups and, if needed, medication adjustments.
Can I get an ADHD diagnosis in the ongoing-care first appointment?
Yes. Both the comprehensive one-off assessment and the ongoing-care first appointment can lead to an ADHD diagnosis — the Medicare rebate for the ongoing-care first appointment is lower, though. If you start with the one-off assessment, you can still move to ongoing care with us later: your GP just needs to issue a further referral.
I was diagnosed with ADHD elsewhere — do I need a new assessment?
Usually not. If you submit your official diagnosis letter before your appointment is booked, you can transfer your care to us with a shorter meet-and-greet appointment — or combine it with your review, if that’s due soon anyway. Important: if your stimulant medication has been stopped for around 2 years or longer without ongoing specialist care, a full new assessment is usually needed — see when a new assessment is required.
I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child — how do I move to adult care?
If you can provide your original diagnosis documents from your paediatrician, and your medication is current or was stopped less than around 2 years ago, a review is usually enough. If the documents are no longer available, or your medication was stopped around 2 years ago or longer, a full new assessment is usually needed. See transitioning from a paediatrician and when a new assessment is required.
When is the best time to book my review?
If clinically appropriate, it’s almost always worth waiting until 12 months or more have passed since your last comprehensive assessment. The fee stays the same, but your Medicare rebate is significantly higher — nearly double. Your GP will need to word the referral accordingly. See review.
Can I book a routine follow-up instead of my review?
No. Routine follow-ups are for existing patients between reviews, but they don’t replace your review, which we require 12 months after your diagnosis.
My GP referral has expired — what do I need?
To continue your follow-ups, your GP simply issues a renewed referral — no new assessment needed. Please note that this doesn’t replace your review, which we require 12 months after your diagnosis — and once 12 months have passed since your last assessment, the review is usually also the most cost-effective option, thanks to the higher Medicare rebate.
Are appointments in person or via telehealth?
All our appointments are via video telehealth, so you can be seen from anywhere in Australia, from the comfort of your home.
What do I need to upload before my appointment is booked?
A GP referral, plus — depending on your situation — your official diagnosis letter (if you’re transferring your care) or your original paediatric diagnosis documents (if you’re moving from paediatric to adult care). If medication may be considered, results such as a urine drug screen, ECG and blood pressure are also needed; see our Booking & Referrals page for the full list. You can upload everything securely through the “Start now” buttons above.
